Ageas
Ageas is a multinational insurance company with about 45.000 employees worldwide. In other words: a big deal. They asked us to design their 5,000m² headquarters in the prestigious Manhattan building, in the very heart of Brussels. We did, and it became our biggest office gig to date.

Ageas asked for a layout that would support their employees’ different ways of working. In addition, they wanted their company culture incorporated into the office design and modus operandi. Finally, the office space had to be as inviting as possible—so that employees wouldn’t mind trading in the comfort of their home offices for the workplace.

First up: figuring out a strategy. We teamed up with our partner PROCOS (they consult and design for humans, not systems—enough said, no?) and had a close look at Ageas’ different ways of working, plus the employees’ corresponding needs. The result: a clear overview of the insurance company’s requirements in terms of infrastructure, flow, and capacity. An activity-based working environment (translation: a variety of workstations suitable for different types of activities) turned out to be key.

We challenged ourselves to incorporate Ageas’ identity and culture into the design, but in a more original way than simply showcasing their logo. So we designed a work environment that encourages innovation, stimulates teamwork, enhances performance and supports employees’ well-being. All that jazz. The one thing we never lost sight of throughout the entire process: optimising employer, employee, and visitor comfort.

With Ageas, we aimed for the perfect mix between a corporate image and a warm, welcoming feeling. At the same time, we felt the headquarters of a listed insurance company should exude a certain sense of distinguished exclusivity. To obtain that atmosphere and ambience, we used wooden cabinets, upholstered furniture, cosy carpets and warm lighting—with a dash of drama where appropriate.

Some more principles we used to bolster our intentions:Warm wood touched by daylight. / Leather-clad furniture. / Soothing lighting and acoustics. / A focus on tactility, combined with green elements. / Office ‘neighbourhoods’ to maximise focus and interaction—without compromising on flexibility. / We signed a lease with Kunst in Huis and Copper & Light, who provide us with new art every year.

The Winter Garden is the daylight-flooded central hub of the office. It connects all floors through a monumental staircase, meaning everybody passes through here on a daily basis. Excellent for chance encounters, informal meetings or just gazing at Brussels’ skyline with the obligatory cup of coffee.

No office is complete without brainstorming spaces, workshop rooms, and meeting areas—all optimised through flexible furniture and facilities, varying grades of privacy and acoustic plus tactile comfort. We also designed some closed meeting rooms in varying styles, with different materials and colour palettes, but with the same amenities and level of comfort. For the employees’ workstations, privacy (without loss of openness) was essential. The executive offices, on the other hand, became private working spaces with integrated meeting facilities. In the office’s various cockpits and silent booths, employees can work alone or in small groups in full concentration.
It’s not like an office could ever beat a home. But we made sure Ageas’ headquarters came close.

The headquarters’ lounges allow for breaks and chats in various locations, while the boardroom combines the best view of Brussels with prestige and hyper-confidentiality. Looking at Ageas’ previous offices, we thought: a huge, multinational insurance company can do better than this. So we designed them something better. We’d bet our hats that once Ageas moves into an office that’s designed in alignment with how they work and who they are, business will change for the better. Just wait and see.
